My Day of Fate

“On this morning of her day of fate, Valancy could not find the key of her Blue Castle. Reality pressed on her too hardly, barking at her heels like a maddening little dog. She was twenty-nine, lonely, undesired, ill-favored—the only homely girl in a handsome clan, with no past and no future. As far as she could look back, life was drab and colourless, with not one single crimson or purple spot anywhere. As far as she could look forward it seemed certain to be just the same until she was nothing but a solitary, little withered leaf clinging to a wintery bought. The moment when a woman realizes that she has nothing to live for—neither love, duty, purpose, nor hope—holds for her the bitterness of death.”

“Deerwood and the Stirlings had long since relegated Valancy to hopeless old maidenhood. But Valancy herself had never quite relinquished a certain pitiful, shamed, little home that Romance would come her way yet—never, until this wet, horrible morning, when she wakened to the fact that she was twenty-nine and unsought by any man.”

Well there you have it: being single at twenty-nine equals spinster. Twenty-nine, however, is The Last Great Milestone for any unmarried fictional heroine. In reaching 29 unmarried, there is still hope. After all, Valancy was unmarried at 29 nine yet in the end found her Blue Castle with rugged good-looking Barney thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately, there is no book that I read growing up that mentions a single woman at the ripe old age of thirty who successfully found love. If you were unmarried at thirty, you were relegated in the world of fiction to old maidenhood. You might as well move in with your unmarried/widowed sister, own one or more cats, and take up gardening. If you were extrememly lucky, at the age of fifty, you might marry a nice widower and fulfill your maternal longings by looking after his nine children. What does that mean? It means that for all you 29 year old single women out there (myself included), this is The Year. If nothing romantically happens to you this year……there is no guarantee for your future. Thirty is uncharted territory.

It took me a moment to figure out where this was coming from...then I realized what day it is.

Happy Birthday!

And you are right...after the age of thirty one should just look to the nunnery.

Ugh, shoot me now please. My goal at this point is to start looking for a widower with 9 children now, so I don't have to wait until I'm 50.

Hope you had a grand birthday! P&P was on Masterpiece this evening, and I laughed so hard at "Her hair, Louisa!" and nobody else really understood it...missed you!

honey you can move back in with your unmarried *seriously* spinster sister anytime.....
and I might add you are *hardly* "unsought by any man"
39 is the new 29, you have 11 more good years on you before you can start spouting about spinsterhood.

happy belated B-day anyway you old maid you.
